Infographic Design 101
Infographics are gaining popularity all over the world. They represent information in a heavily visual way. The following are elements of a strong infographic:
- A catchy title...and a brief description
- Simple and soft color scheme...about three – five colors
- Only two-three font types...and two of them should be similar
- Lots of numbers...and those numbers should be big
Your Infographic Requirements
- Choose a topic you know a lot about...but you might also need to lookup additional information.
- Organize meaningful information about this topic in a focused manner.
- Include a title at the top and a description of your topic.
- Create a balanced layout. See above cheat sheet for layouts.
- Choose a color scheme of no more than 5 colors, and only 2 of these colors can be shade gradients of each other, meaning lighter or darker versions. Objects are exempt from this, but I encourage you to pick objects that best fit your color scheme.
- Choose at least two, but no more than 3 fonts that complement each other nicely. Include at least 5 number facts or statistics.
- Include at least 10 objects/images/shapes on your infographic. This is an absolute minimum.
- Include your name at the bottom of the infographic.
Infographic Examples
Things to consider:
- VISUAL LAYOUT: How will you make this visually appealing to your audience? What makes the most sense to express your ideas?
- SIZE: Consider the sizes of the font, shapes, and icons. What do you want the viewer to notice? How would you show importance of the adversity and claim compared to the other components?
- MOOD: What is the mood of your work? What colors or color theme (2-3 colors) can be used to portray this? What emotions do you want the audience to feel?
- TEXT FEATURES: How will you use font, heading, icons, captions, bold/italic print, and/or maps to express your argument?
