Routines
1. Bins: When the students enter the classroom, the iPad goes into a bin thats located in the center of the desk pods. The students remove the device when given permission by a teacher.
2. Specific location on desk (When iPad is not in use) Students are aware that the expectation is that the iPad is to be closed and in a specific location top, right hand corner of the desk or underneath the desk when not in use.
3. Specific location on desk (When iPad is in use) Students are aware that the expectation is that the iPad is to be open on their desk with the screen visible to a teacher when in use.
4. **Almost all HMS teachers: Check daily agenda: Students enter the classroom and immediately open up to the Schoology agenda and read through today's plan. After reading the agenda, they either proceed to their "TO DO NOW", or follow additional directions.

5. Allow "Sandbox Time": Give students a chance to play/explore a new app before expecting them to use it for a project or lesson. This can be done at home as "homework" or for those of you that teach homeroom during that time while also incorporating some homeroom curriculum.
6. Make sure to begin with a Schoology Discussion Lesson: discuss how online discussions are similar and different to in class ones. Set clear expectations. (See Maayan for example lesson.)

Common Language
Use some sort of phrase to get student attention when they are using their iPads.
1. "Flip it over"
2. "Make your screens black"
3. "Apples Up"
4. "Off and Over"
*One thing to note: We do not recommend having students put their case covers on when iPad is not in use during class. This is time consuming and loud! Just have students put the covers on at the end of the period.

What if a student is not using their devices properly?
Try not to take the device away. Instead try one of these:
- Move the students location in the room so that they are closer to you
- Lock down the iPad using Guided Access (QSG Below!--Remember, you must turn Guided Access off in settings when you wish to remove the student, otherwise, they may accidently lock themselves back in and not know the password to get out.)
- Ask us about adding iPad restrictions
A Teacher's Role in iPad Management
The role of the teacher is changing! Tips for successful iPad Management:
1. Constant movement: make sure to circulate the classroom and keep your eyes on what is on the students' devices.
2. Know the signs: watch their hands, where is the iPad located, kids gathering or unnecessary eye contact, habitual misusers
3. Don't be afraid of giving consequences: we made the Technology Misuse chart to help support teachers. It is OKAY to give a demerit, the chart, the tech team and the admin have your back! Trust us, it works to help deter other students as well.
4. Know your rights: You can and should grab a student's iPad at ANY time and check it.
